Carpentopod: a coffee table that can walk (yes, it can bring you a beer)
An engineer has created an unusual coffee table called Carpentopod. It can independently move around the room and bring objects.
Here's What We Know
The enthusiast equipped the robot table with 12 legs. The Carpentopod's leg joint itself was generated by a simulation that created thousands of virtual generations of leg variations, making them compete with each other.
Each variation was assigned a "suitability" score based on its walking speed, clearance and material usage. In this way the engineer was able to find the best version.
Using simulation, the engineer also chose a rounded shape for the ends of the legs. According to the study, this was the option that minimised slipping while walking.
Each leg is created from laminated bamboo and was designed in Autodesk Fusion 360.
The table also has an inbuilt 14.8 volt LiPo battery and a Bluetooth module to connect a remote control.
