The make-up artist of Batman and Penguin told us his vision of how to bring fantastic characters like Clayface or Two-Face to life in a mundane universe

While the villains that will appear in Batman: Part 2 remains a mystery, the make-up artist who worked on the Penguin and Joker in the first film has offered an idea of how fantastical characters like Clayface or Two-Face could be brought to life in Matt Reeves' mundane Batman universe.

Here's What We Know

Mike Marino, the artist responsible for Colin Farrell's transformation into the Penguin, believes that even the most outlandish characters can be realistic. Drawing inspiration from the bizarre phenomena found in nature, Marino suggests that characters like Clayface, with his shape-shifting abilities, can be made incredibly realistic.

"There are so many strange things that happen in nature," explains Marino. "There are so many people who have really strange things happen to them, with their skin, their appearance, their faces swelling, parts of their face falling off, and all of this happens in such a way that if you actually saw what a real corpse looks like, you wouldn't believe it was real. You would think it was fake. It's not real. But it is real."

He believes that by referring to real-world phenomena, even the most fantastic abilities can be justified in a believable way.

And while the Penguin's return in the sequel is almost guaranteed, Marino also hinted at the possibility of other villains. "I think there's room for other things," he said. "That's a question for Matt. That's what I'm here for. If he wants me to be involved, I'm in."

As a reminder, the first episode of The Penguin in Matt Reeves' Batman universe premiered on HBO Max on 19 September.

The series will begin immediately after the end of Batman (2022) and will show how Oz Cobb expands his influence on Gotham and becomes an even greater criminal authority in the city.

The Penguin will be played by the brilliant Colin Farrell. The actor has already played the villain in Batman with Pattinson.

The Penguin will have 8 episodes, which will be released weekly. Lauren LeFranc is the writer and showrunner. Matt Reeves, the director of Batman, is the executive producer.
