Google expands the functionality of its password manager: access keys now on all platforms

Google has announced a major update to its password manager that allows you to use access keys on desktops running on Windows, macOS and Linux.

What's known

Previously, passkeys were only available for Android, but they now sync across all devices, including Windows, macOS and Linux, with ChromeOS currently in beta testing. This update removes the need to scan QR codes from Android devices, making the login process faster and more secure. Users can use biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to log into websites from desktops.

The new devices will require a six-digit end-to-end encrypted PIN to create and use access keys. Google says that this PIN cannot be shared with anyone, not even the company itself. Users can also opt for a longer alphanumeric PIN for added security. Apple also recently made similar changes that also simplified password management with a new Passwords app for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15.
