Apple has won a legal dispute with medical device maker Masimo and sued... $250

Apple and medical device maker Masimo are currently involved in several lawsuits. And Apple has already emerged victorious in one of them.

Details

In October 2022, Apple filed two patent infringement lawsuits against Masimo. The first lawsuit accused Masimo of copying the Apple Watch design. The second said the specifications of Masimo's devices infringed Apple's patents on the technology used in the Apple Watch.

The other day, a jury ruled that Masimo's W1 and Freedom watches and chargers do copy the Apple Watch design, thus infringing patent rights.

Apple's lawyers told the court that the ultimate goal of its lawsuit was to get an injunction against the sale of Masimo's smart watches, but that didn't happen. The court ordered Masimo to pay $250 in damages to Apple.

In addition, the jury found that the Masimo watch did not infringe Apple's patents relating to smartwatch inventions.

However, the most important dispute between Apple and Masimo is still ongoing. It concerns the Apple Watch's blood oxygen sensor. Because of this court case, Apple had to first remove some smartwatch models from sales in the US and then Apple removed the heart rate oximeter from the Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 to get around the smartwatch sales ban order to be able to continue selling the wearable device.
