"The developers of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to release the game on PlayStation 3 - the problem was the limited memory of the console
Since its release in 2006, the PlayStation 3 has been criticised by developers for its difficulties with the console, in particular for problems with its memory architecture. Former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith, who left the company in 2021, recently spoke about his experience of launching Skyrim on PlayStation 3, calling it a "gigantic effort" due to the console's limited memory.
Here's What We Know
Speaking to VideoGamer, Nesmith explained that the console's memory was evenly split between game logic and graphics, with clear boundaries, unlike the Xbox 360's flexible memory allocation. This made Skyrim run much smoother on the 360, while the version for Sony's console required significant effort from the development team just to make it functional.
The PlayStation 3 version of the game has been criticised for technical issues, although Nesmith noted that post-launch updates have greatly improved the experience, he admitted that the Xbox 360 remains the better platform to play on.
