Android 15 now supports Wi-Fi Ranging for accurate indoor geolocation

Android 15 now supports the IEEE 802.11az (Wi-Fi Ranging) protocol, which allows you to accurately determine your location indoors with an accuracy of up to 1 metre.

Here's What We Know

This technology significantly improves tracking capabilities over previous methods that used only Wi-Fi signal strength to determine location. With Wi-Fi Ranging, using Fine Timing Measurement (FTM) technology, the location accuracy can even be less than 1 metre.

Wi-Fi Ranging operates in the 6 GHz band and supports a larger number of connected devices, opening up new possibilities for precise location determination inside large spaces such as shopping malls or exhibition halls. However, to use this technology, it is necessary that the device has the appropriate support and that the Wi-Fi access point supports the new 802.11az standard.

Thanks to this technology, Android 15 improves indoor navigation, which can be useful for apps that help you find products in stores or for automation systems in homes.
