Mark Zuckerberg announces a new wave of layoffs at Meta: 5% of employees will lose their jobs
Meta is preparing for new layoffs, Bloomberg reports. The company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an internal letter that he plans to fire about five per cent of "low-performing" employees.
Here's What We Know
"I have decided to increase performance requirements and fire low-performing employees more quickly," Zuckerberg said in his letter. "We usually gradually let go of those who don't meet expectations over the course of a year, but now we'll be making larger performance-based reductions this cycle."
In total, this could lead to a 10 per cent reduction in Meta's workforce, including layoffs due to natural attrition. Bloomberg notes that the upcoming layoffs will focus on those who have been with the company long enough to receive a performance review.
Due to planned layoffs and dismissals for other reasons, up to 7,000 Meta employees may leave the company in the near future. This is a continuation of the wave of layoffs that began at the end of 2022 and affected more than 20,000 employees. In addition, in early January, the company laid off 60 technical programme managers.
The year has started rather turbulently for Meta: in January, Zuckerberg has already stopped fact-checking on third-party Meta platforms, appointed Dana White as the UFC's supervisory director, and travelled to Mar-a-La-Lo.
Recently, it became known that Meta will allow adding notes to publications to clarify or specify information. In addition, Zuckerberg announced that Meta will lift some restrictions on topics such as politics and human rights, as well as end its diversity, equality and inclusion programme, which has drawn criticism from some users.
