Google announced Android XR in December 2024, but at the time there was no way to showcase Samsung's Project Moohan prototype. As we approach the launch in 2025, an extended look at the experience is now available thanks to a video from MKBHD.

Here's What We Know

Google has allowed the video to be made with a real-life experience of using the headset. You can start watching from 6:13 minutes into the video.

Activating Gemini through Quick Settings allows the system to listen to user commands, while it is able to analyse information both on the virtual screen and from the headset's front cameras. This makes it possible to understand what is happening in the real world.

For example, if a user is watching a video and something catches their attention, they can simply ask Gemini about it. This can include translations, determining the geolocation of an object in Google Maps, or explaining events in a YouTube video.

The system can also answer questions about the world around you, for example, show you the results of a football team if you are looking at a person wearing their shirt.

Gemini/Astra works quietly in the background, not interfering with the conversation until the user asks a question.

Questions to the system can be asked without any additional clarification. Astra is currently only available to testers, but will soon be available in the Gemini app for Pixel and Galaxy S25.

At the Galaxy S25 presentation, the headset hardware was presented. Android XR has a design similar to Vision Pro, but weighs less due to the use of lighter plastic instead of metal. In addition, the device features an innovative "forehead rest" design that allows for better weight distribution. This reduces the need for additional straps, making the device more comfortable to wear.

The cable connects to the battery pack via USB-C for the ability to connect additional units.
