Next week will see the release of Sid Meier's Civilisation VII, which will be a new instalment in the iconic series of historical 4X-strategies.

In the pre-release materials the developers promised a lot of new mechanics, improvements of old features, impressive technical execution and a new system of nation development. Critics have already got acquainted with Civilisation VII and told about their impressions.

Here's What We Know

Most of the experts were satisfied with the new strategy. They state that the game has excellent graphics, advanced AI, exciting gameplay and interesting mechanics.

Journalists warn that the game is so addictive that gamers can lose track of time and spend many more hours in it than planned.

The developers from Firaxis really refined many elements of the previous parts, supplemented and expanded them with new features.

Sid Meier's Civilisation VII looks and sounds great, but a lot of criticism is directed at the interface: its elements are too small, they appear out of time, information is difficult to read, and many important data are either missing or hidden in non-obvious sections. As one reviewer said: "...if you forget where you sent the explorer, you'll never find him...".

Civilisation VII tries to be both a deep and complex game and at the same time accessible to newcomers to the genre, and because of this there is a dissonance, as the game is either too casual or, on the contrary, overly complex.

Another disadvantage is the small amount of content, which, obviously, will be added in DLC and free updates.

As a result, Civilisation VII gets quite high scores and at the time of writing the material the game has:

  • 80 points on Metacritic (so far the score is only for the PC-version);
  • on OpenCritic 82 points with 85% of recommendations.

Almost unanimously experts say that the new strategy has a huge potential for development and many shortcomings will surely be corrected in the future, but so far the game is far from perfect.

When We Can Expect It

Sid Meier's Civilisation VII will be released on 11 February on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch. Buyers of the premium edition will be able to start playing the game on 6 February.

The game will immediately receive Steam Deck support.
