Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, Lead Quest Designer for The Witcher 3, said that CD Projekt Red was initially worried about whether players would be able to take in the big story of an open-world role-playing game. The team hesitated whether this format would be combined with the scale of the planned story.

Here's What We Know

In an interview, Tomaszkiewicz shared that the developers wanted to combine a long narrative, typical for linear RPGs, with an open world. The Witcher 2, for example, had a more corridor-based structure, and moving The Witcher 3 to a giant world was a risky move.

"I don't think there were a lot of games at the time that were trying to do what we were doing, which was trying to combine a big story that was usually built in more linear RPGs, like The Witcher 2, and we tried to bring that into an open world," Tomaszkiewicz said.

Despite the concerns, CD Projekt Red took the risk. In the end, The Witcher 3 was widely recognised and became one of the best RPGs in history. Some people believe that the open world harms the main storyline of the game, but the developers took care of the quality design of quests to maintain a balance between freedom of exploration and a good story.
