The new iPhone 16e, the most affordable of the iPhone 16 series, which was unveiled yesterday, 19 February, has received an A18 processor, which, as it turns out, is not the same standard used in the main iPhone 16 model.

Here's What We Know

According to Apple's official specs, the A18 chip in the iPhone 16e has a 6-core processor (2 performance cores and 4 power efficiency cores), a 4-core GPU and a 16-core neural engine. While the number of CPU cores and neural cores is the same as the regular A18 chip, the GPU on the 16e gets one less core. This difference likely won't be noticeable in real-world performance, but it may show up in benchmarks and more demanding games.

The A18 chip in the iPhone 16e is the result of a quality control process where chips that don't achieve maximum performance and efficiency are separated into separate categories and in such chips, certain cores are disabled or frequencies are lowered. These "low-end" chips are then sold at a lower price.

The iPhone 16e also gets a 6.1-inch OLED display, 48 MP main camera, Face ID, USB-C port and Apple's first custom 5G modem, which offers better power efficiency.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e will open on 21 February and sales will begin on 28 February. Pricing starts at $599 for the version with 128GB of storage.
