Before the relaunch, Avowed was planned as a "multiplayer Skyrim" - game director

Recently, Obsidian Entertainment released Avowed, a single-player RPG game with fantasy elements. However, as it turned out, the game could have looked completely different from what we see now - before its relaunch, it was planned as a kind of "multiplayer Skyrm".
Here's What We Know
In 2021, the concept of Avowed underwent a radical transformation: it was originally planned as a multiplayer project, and development was to begin after the acquisition of Obsidian by Microsoft. However, the purchase of the studio led to a change in direction, and the development team was tasked with rethinking the project.
Carrie Patel, the game's director, explained in an interview with Bloomberg that while a "creative re-evaluation" of a project requires a small team, Avowed was already at a larger stage of development. According to her, this meant that the lessons learned during production would ideally have been explored in a more controlled, pre-production environment.
The game's open-world design was also replaced with a "zone" structure reminiscent of The Outer Worlds (2019). This change was driven by both creative and logistical considerations, which the development team openly discussed.
In conclusion, P Patel expressed her enthusiasm for the future of Avowed, highlighting the potential for expanding the world and leveraging the team's new experience.
Where To Play
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series and PC (Windows). The game is also included in the Game Pass catalogue.
