Id Software director Marty Stratton told us why the latest trailer for DOOM: The Dark Ages pays so much attention to the plot, although the series has traditionally focused on gameplay. According to him, the stories in the new DOOM games have proved to be very popular among players.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with EDGE, Stratton noted that despite the minimalist approach to storytelling in DOOM 2016, players were still enthusiastically immersed in the game's lore.

"In a lot of interviews, the first question is about the story," Stratton says. "There are YouTube channels dedicated to analysing every detail of the iconography. Our data shows that an extremely high percentage of players watch all the cutscenes in DOOM Eternal."

The developer emphasises that the story has become an integral part of DOOM: The Dark Ages: "DOOM without a story is just an arcade game. Yes, there are people who like that kind of experience, but that's what the 'skip' button is for."

It is worth noting that DOOM Eternal has already paid much more attention to the plot than its predecessor. The lore was revealed not only through text entries and item descriptions but also through cut-scenes and dialogues.

DOOM: The Dark Ages will be released on 15 May on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
