In a new interview with the game's director Hugo Martin and producer Marty Stratton, we discussed the possibility of completing Doom: The Dark Ages exclusively using the new melee mechanics. Will someone be able to overcome all the challenges without touching a weapon?

Here's What We Know

Speaking to PC Gamer, Martin noted that although completing the game using melee mechanics alone might be "a little bit out of the realm of possibility", it is quite realistic for experienced players. "If people can get through Dark Souls without taking damage and complete the pistol challenges in Doom 2016, I'm sure they'll find a way to do it with shield and melee," he said.

However, Stratton warned that the game was not designed for this style of play. "It can make for an awkward and not always fun experience," he added, comparing it to the pistol challenge in Doom 2016.

Doom: The Dark Ages introduces new mechanics that allow players to use a variety of melee weapons, such as an electrified gauntlet or spiked mace, allowing players to experiment with attack combinations.

Doom: The Dark Ages is out on 15 May 2025 on PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5.
