The French military continues to test FPV drones, expanding the ability to launch them from various air platforms. After experimenting with transport helicopters, France is now testing the possibility of launching kamikaze drones from a light transport aircraft similar to the An-28.

Here's What We Know

According to the French portal Opex360, the test was organised by the Centre of Aircraft Expertise (CEAM) for the French Air Force General Staff. The purpose of the experiment is to assess the practicality of using FPV drones and guided munitions launched from light transport aircraft to enhance the capabilities of French special forces.

The DHC 6 Twin Otter aircraft, which is comparable in performance to the An-28, was used for the tests. The tests were carried out using inert (training) ammunition and were deemed successful, although the technical details of the launch were not disclosed.

Defence Express believes that this concept does not yet seem entirely practical for modern warfare, especially given the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. However, in general, the idea of using light aircraft as launch platforms for drones can find its place if the format of its implementation is successfully chosen.

In this context, it is worth mentioning the Russian attempt to use the An-2 to tow Lancet kamikaze drones, although it was not implemented. At the same time, Ukraine has already successfully used unmanned bombers from the FAB-250 to strike at frontline areas and targets in Russia, which demonstrates the realism of such approaches in combat conditions.
