Samsung Electronics has announced another update to its global connected living platform, SmartThings. The main feature of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, which allows you to improve sleep conditions and customise automation to individual user habits. The Calm Onboarding feature has also been expanded to support more devices and compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard has been added.

Integration with Samsung Health for better sleep

The main innovation is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, which allows you to improve the sleeping conditions of users and create more personalised automated scenarios. Samsung Health 's Sleep Environment Reports on Galaxy devices provide detailed information about key factors such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity using connected devices and sensors. These reports summarise the previous night's sleeping conditions and offer personalised recommendations for improvement. When connected to a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, SmartThings can automatically adjust the environment based on the user's actual sleep and wake times. For example, you can set up scenarios to turn off the lights and TV before bed or open the curtains and play music in the morning.

Expanded automation capabilities with SmartThings Routines

The update adds support for automated scenarios based on recurring schedules - weekly, monthly, or yearly - to provide additional flexibility for different situations. For example, users can automatically change the colour of smart bulbs to celebrate special events such as family members' birthdays. Additionally, SmartThings scenarios now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on Samsung 2025 TV models, allowing you to incorporate entertainment preferences into smart home scenarios. For example, you can set your TV to turn on the news in the morning or switch to your favourite channel at a set time so you don't miss a show.

Broadcasting through speakers connected to SmartThings

The new Broadcast feature allows users to send voice messages through their SmartThings-connected speakers, making it easier to communicate around the house. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app - "I'll be home soon, but if you're hungry, grab a snack from the fridge" - it will automatically play on the assigned home speaker. With instant message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to more devices

Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding, which simplifies setup for home devices purchased through Samsung.com or official Samsung stores, by unifying the entire process from ordering and delivery to connecting with the SmartThings app. This feature is now being extended to compatible third-party smart home devices, providing a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible devices directly from Samsung.com will receive purchase and delivery updates in the SmartThings app, as well as step-by-step instructions for setting up the product. The rollout will begin in Korea with plans to expand to other countries.Samsung Newsroom

Support for Matter 1.4 standard

SmartThings continues to expand its support for the Matter 1.4 standard, which was introduced in November 2024. The new standard includes a wide range of energy management devices such as water heaters, heat pumps, solar panels, energy storage devices, wall switches, and dimmers. These new categories of devices complement existing popular device types such as lighting, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks, and more.

Key innovations in Matter 1.4:

  • New types of devices - heat pumps, home batteries, solar panels and inverters, hybrid power systems (panels + batteries), routers and access points
  • Multi-administrator management - improved interaction between platforms (e.g. HomeKit and Google Home) without additional settings.
  • Energy management - tracking the electricity consumption of individual devices and creating scenarios to save energy.
  • Support for electric vehicles - new options for charging management, including scheduling, setting a target charge, and more.

With the integration of AI-powered scenarios, expanded device compatibility, and the introduction of the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reaffirms its commitment to innovation, making the connected home smarter, more energy efficient, and more convenient for users and their families.
