Google has stripped anonymity advocates of some of the walking navigation features

Google Maps is one of the most important tools in a user's arsenal. You can use it to get turn-by-turn directions to places you've never been before. And iOS and Android app users have started getting a notification when they launch the app, which explains how important crowdsourced data is to the navigation and mapping app.

The catch is that if you don't allow Google Maps to use your data, you will no longer be able to use real-time navigation with turns in the Google Maps app on your phone. The page notes that "Google uses your and other people's data to improve maps for everyone." Last September, Google claimed that "more than 1 billion kilometers are 'driven' around the world every day using the app."

The claim goes on to say, "In the navigation process, Google collects data such as GPS location and route traveled. This data can be used to make information, including real-time road conditions and glitches, visible to others and help them find the fastest route. These map updates will not be linked to your Google account or device."

Thanks to your location data, Google Maps knows your current location, where you're going, how long it will take you to get there, traffic conditions, whether you're driving or walking, and more. All of this data helps Google Maps provide turn-by-turn navigation, arrival times, traffic conditions, and alternate routes.

Requests that Google now sends out offer two options: "Cancel" and "Start". If you choose "Cancel," you will no longer be able to receive navigation with real-time voice prompts. Instead, you'll get the standard step-by-step list that takes you to your next destination.
