Volvo autonomous loader prototype based on LEGO model [video]

Volvo is looking to bring autonomous electric vehicle technology to construction crews, but it has chosen a rather unusual approach to do so. The automaker has unveiled the prototype autonomous loader LX03, which is based on the LEGO model - 42081 LEGO Technic Concept Wheel Loader Zeux, if you are interested. The machine can lift and move 5 tons of cargo and make independent decisions in a variety of situations, including working together with people.

The LX03 prototype has a unique modular design. Volvo can make "just one or two changes" to make a larger or smaller loader according to customer requirements. Of course, the prototype is electric and can run for up to eight hours depending on load. Thus, it should be available during a normal working day.

Of course, the prototype is not a production unit. However, it represents the "next stage" in Volvo's AI research efforts. There's no denying the appeal of creating a real, fully functional auxiliary vehicle on a modular "LEGO" basis, especially when it could be the beginning of a future in which humans are removed from dangerous and monotonous jobs.
