Facebook will need user permission to display targeted ads in the EU
A court in the European Union has ruled that Meta must obtain users' consent to display personalised advertising.
Here's What We Know
According to the ruling, such ads do not justify processing large amounts of data without users' permission. The court also fined Meta €390 million for forcing Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users to accept personalised ads.
The EU requires that consent to use the features be "freely given"". The court also finds that Meta breached the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by requesting data for targeting ads for basic use by Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
In a new ruling, the Court of Justice of the European Union said it was incumbent on the website operator to prove that people give consent voluntarily.
