Volkswagen to test unmanned ID Buzz vans on public roads in Austin, USA
Volkswagen has announced that it will test autonomous vehicles in the US, starting with versions of the ID Buzz electric minibus.
Here's What We Know
The new fleet will begin testing on public roads in Austin, Texas, starting later this month.
The initial fleet consists of 10 minibuses. Each vehicle will be driven by a trained driver whose job it is to keep an eye on the road and take over in case of an emergency.
The company is developing the hardware and software for the unmanned cars in-house, together with partner Mobileye. Over the next three years, the carmaker plans to test the vehicles in Austin and four other US cities, before launching a robot taxi service in 2026.
To do so, VW is creating a new subsidiary, Volkswagen ADMT, with offices in Austin and Belmont, California. ID Buzz autonomous cars will also be sold to other companies.
