The BBC, the UK's largest news organisation, has outlined its approach to the use of generative AI. The company is open to using the technology in journalism, but has banned the collection of data from its websites.

Here's What We Know

The BBC's director of nations, Rhodri Talfan Davies, said the broadcaster believes the technology offers opportunities to provide value to viewers.

The company says it will work in the public interest when utilising AI. Also, the BBC intends to put talent and creativity first and be open about AI-generated content.

The broadcaster also plans to co-operate with other companies and regulators to implement new technologies safely.

At the same time, the company has blocked web crawlers OpenAI and Common Crawl from accessing its sites. This measure is designed to protect copyrighted content. BBC representatives claim that training AI on the company's data without its permission is against public interest.

Earlier, CNN, The New York Times and other major media companies introduced a similar ban on data collection.
