The adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, particularly large language models like ChatGPT, could enable a shift to a 4-day working week for 28% of workers in the UK and US by 2033, with no loss of pay or productivity.
Here's What We Know
These are the conclusions reached by think tank Autonomy in its new report. We are talking about approximately 8.8 million Britons and 35 million Americans. According to experts, this will help avoid mass unemployment and reduce the prevalence of stress in the workplace.
The study found that in the UK, 38 per cent or more of workers in the urban counties of London, Elmbridge and Wokingham could switch to 4-day working. In the US, the greatest potential is seen in Massachusetts, Utah and Washington DC.
Will Stronge, director of the Centre, believes AI technologies should be used not only to improve business profitability, but also to improve people's work-life balance.
Analysts are urging employers and policymakers to actively adopt AI in the workplace, seeing it as an opportunity to improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people.
