Trump supporters spread AI-generated fake photos of Black supporters

Ahead of the US presidential election, artificial intelligence-generated images showing former President Donald Trump surrounded by Black supporters are appearing on social media.

Here's What We Know

These fake photos are designed to give the impression of Trump's popularity among the Black voters, which may be biased against him due to his ties to white supremacist groups.

One such image, circulated by conservative talk show host Mark Kaye to his audience of millions on Facebook, shows Trump embracing a group of Black people. That said, the original post did not indicate that the photo was generated by artificial intelligence.

Another clearly fake photo that appeared on social network X (formerly Twitter) shows a Black man holding a placard in support of the former president with three arms - a sure sign of AI fakery.

An AI-generated fake

A separate account, @Trump_History45, regularly posts generated images of Trump in the company of Black people without labelling them authentic. While some of the images are clearly humorous, comments on the more realistic posts show that many people mistake them for real photos.

No direct connection between these AI fakes and Trump's campaign headquarters is yet known. The former president himself has repeatedly accused those who post unflattering photos of him, including recent golf course shots, of using AI.
