The US Air Force evacuated KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft due to Category 3 Hurricane Idalia hitting Florida
The US Navy on Monday began evacuating warships that were in Florida. The reason was the Category 3 hurricane Idalia. The US Air Force also decided to move some assets to a safer location.
Here's What We Know
US Air Force Base MacDill, evacuated personnel and KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuellers. The base itself was closed and is under guard. This is reported by the publication Air & Space Forces Magazine with reference to a spokesman for the U.S. Air Force.
At MacDill Air Force Base is located headquarters of the U.S. Central Command and the U.S. Special Operations Command. It is also home to more than 20 military units.
The KC-135 tankers were deployed to U.S. Air Force bases March, California; Tinker, Oklahoma; McConnell, Kansas; and Bangor Air National Guard Base, Maine.
Other bases may also be in the path of Hurricane Idalia. These include Eglin, Hurlburt Field and Tyndall, which was destroyed by Hurricane Michael five years ago. Rain and high winds are expected at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia. The same goes for Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.
