Russians have for the first time shown on video a deck-mounted Su-33 fighter jet seconds after crashing into the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to land on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier
Almost seven years have passed since the Russian Su-33 deck-mounted fighter jet crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. And now the Russians have shown footage taken seconds after the plane hit the water.
Here's What We Know
The incident took place on 3 December 2016. According to experts, on that day, visibility reached +10 kilometres, wind speed did not exceed 22 km/h, and the sea state was estimated at 4 points (moderate excitement).
After completing a combat mission in Syria, the Russian Su-33 deck fighter was returning to the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier. While attempting to land, the aircraft rolled off the deck and fell into the Mediterranean Sea.
The Russians confirmed the emergency incident and said the pilot managed to eject in time. The cause of the Su-33's crash into the sea was the breakage of the aerofinish cable used to land the fighter.
