Japan may deploy fifth-generation F-35A Lightning II fighters in Australia, along with the F-15 Eagle and Mitsubishi F-2s
Japan is preparing to rotate aircraft, including fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters, to Australia. The move will be aimed at bolstering defence capabilities amid rising tensions with China.
Here's What We Know
Japan's Self-Defence Force plan calls for fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to be stationed in Australia alongside older F-15 Eagle and Mitsubishi F-2 aircraft. They will take part in joint exercises with the Royal Australian Air Force.
Early in the second half of the year, Japan's fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets made their first-ever visit to Australia. The aircraft flew 6,400 kilometres and landed at the Royal Australian Air Force's Tindal base in the north of the country.
Japan originally wanted to send four fighters, but in the end only two F-35A Lightning IIs arrived in Australia. They were escorted by KC-767, C-130 Hercules and Kawasaki C-2 aircraft.
