The Republic of Korea is investing nearly $600 million to modernise the Son Won-II KSS-II class diesel-electric submarines
The authorities of the Republic of Korea are ready to allocate almost $600 million for the modernisation of the Son Won-II class KSS-II diesel-electric submarines. The first submarine of this type was introduced into the fleet more than 15 years ago.
Here's What We Know
The first KSS-II Son Won-II class submarine surpassed the capabilities of the KSS-I Jan Bogo class submarine. Not least because of its ability to launch Hyunmoo-III cruise missiles with a launch range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
The modernisation programme is focused on improving the operational capabilities of the submarines in service. The project will include the installation of a new combat control system, hydroacoustics and modern South Korean-made equipment.
The comprehensive upgrade of the KSS-II Son Won-II class submarines will cost $595.68 million. The project is expected to start in 2025 and be completed in 2036. The modernisation will improve the survivability and combat capability of the submarines.
Additionally, the Republic of Korea will invest $320.17 million in the Maritime Tactical Data Link project. The programme is aimed at upgrading the navy's digital communication system to Link-22 level. Scrapping Link 11 and moving to the more advanced Link 22 standard will ensure effective dissemination of tactical information to the joint maritime forces and strengthen interoperability with allies, including the U.S. Navy.
