China has officially confirmed the construction of a Type 054B-class guided missile frigate

In late summer, photos of the new Chinese Type 054B frigate appeared on social media. A few days later, the construction of the ship was confirmed officially.

Here's What We Know

The photos show the launching of the warship. China's Ministry of Defence officially confirmed the development of a new guided-missile frigate, but did not specify the stage. It is built as part of the expansion programme of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy.

It is reportedly a consequence of the arrangement, which is based on national security needs and the development of naval construction. The fleet expansion is aimed at protecting China's national sovereignty and interests. This was stated by Chinese Ministry of Defence spokesman Senior Colonel Wu Qian.

The Type 054B-class frigate will be armed with HQ-16 anti-aircraft missiles, Yu-8 torpedoes, Eagle Strike 83 anti-ship missiles, HQ-10 short-range air defence system and 100mm cannon. Drones and Z-20 helicopters will be stationed aboard the ship.
