Spencer's ploy: Microsoft bought ZeniMax to prevent Bethesda's Starfield from becoming a Sony exclusive - Xbox head admits
During the FTC's court hearings against the Microsoft and Activision Blizzard deal, Xbox head Phil Spencer made another high-profile announcement.
Here's What We Know
The head of Microsoft's gaming division said that the corporation acquired ZeniMax Media, and with it publisher Bethesda Softworks, mainly to ensure that the role-playing game Starfield would not become a PlayStation exclusive.
According to Spencer, Sony regularly pays developers to keep their games off the Xbox. This was the case with two Bethesda projects, Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, and there were reports that the same stunt would be repeated with Starfield, so Microsoft decided to be proactive.
Whether it was worth the $7.5 billion, we'll find out on September 6 when the space role-playing game will be released.
