'The Suicide Squad' director David Ayer shares a "simple recipe" for solving DC's box office disaster

David Ayer, director of "The Suicide Squad", has offered his simple solution to the box office problems of the current DC universe. The DCEU has faced many challenges in recent years, ranging from a lack of interest to various controversies.

Here's What We Know

According to former DC director David Ayer, the key to fixing the franchise is giving directors creative freedom and not acting out of fear. It's also worth sticking to DC's dark, tense and thoughtful style of storytelling, according to the director.

2022 and 2023 were a real disaster for the outgoing DCEU franchise, preceding a "soft" reboot from James Gunn and Peter Safran in the coming years. What exactly went wrong is still a matter of debate among fans. Suggested explanations range from a general lack of interest in the incoherent franchise to the uproar over Henry Cavill's departure from the role of Superman and Ezra Miller's multiple arrests.

However, Ayer believes that there is another, categorically wrong component to the entire franchise, and it could easily be fixed. In recent years, one of Warner Bros. Studios' biggest successes in the superhero genre has been "Batman," a complete repudiation of the usual technological and sci-fi elements of the comic book hero on screen that returned to his detective roots in a dark and realistic story.

Despite being a "not for everyone" film, "Batman" has been more successful domestically than, for example, "Batman vs Superman". Its box office receipts in the U.S. of just over $360 million were higher than the worldwide box office receipts of any DC film in the last year.

The main difference with "Batman" is that the film is based on the personal vision of Matt Reeves and was seemingly created without much studio interference. For Suicide Squad director David Ayer, this is how all DC films should be made, and he believes this simple solution can fix the franchise's difficulties.

In a post on Twitter, he responded to THR's question, "Where have all the DC fans disappeared to?":

"Easy solve. Let film makers have their vision. Don’t operate from fear. Be daring. Look at what worked. Don’t chase the market. DC has always had the best characters in publishing. Dark intense and thoughtful is the brand."
