A reboot of "Highlander" with Henry Cavill could be a franchise in the hands of Chad Stahelski

Chad Stahelski is hard at work on the Highlander reboot and has hinted that he already has major plans to introduce and develop the mythology, which is an encouraging sign for the future of the franchise.

Here's What We Know

Stahelski's "Highlander" reboot promises to be something like "John Wick" with swords, bringing a fantasy element to his iconic brand of action. Henry Cavill has been cast as the title character, and although only one film is currently planned, Stahelski is preparing a bright future for the franchise.

The original Highlander film met with varying reviews in 1986, but has since been recognised as a cult film. It tells the story of the eternal battle between immortal warriors, interweaving past and present to encompass the entire storyline. Stahelski's reboot is just as ambitious, if not more so, as it builds up the mythology and world, leaving room for multiple sequels.

Although only one Highlander film is currently in development (there can only be one!), the door is wide open for spin-offs to follow. Stahelski explained:

"Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that [from the franchise’s history], but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel – a setup to The Gathering – so we have room to grow the property"

If The Highlander is successful, the writers won't have to start from scratch to come up with a story for the sequel because Stahelski has already conceived of many potential projects in the first film. It may seem questionable to think about a sequel instead of just focusing on telling a great story, but Stahelski has proven with his past work that he can balance both perfectly.

When We Can Expect It

Like many future films, "Highlander" may not get an exact release date due to the Hollywood strike, as it's not clear when filming will begin.
