Director of "Doctor Strange" and "Black Phone" Scott Derrickson refused to adapt the work of Stephen King: the reason and the future path of the project

Despite his clear commitment to King's works, director Scott Derrickson has confirmed that he has left The Breathing Method project.

Here's What We Know

The creator of projects such as Doctor Strange, Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil and The Black Phone has turned down a film adaptation of Stephen King's The Breathing Method, admitting that one of the issues was who owned the rights to the story from King's collection Different Seasons."

"I don't know where the rights are on that. I don't even know if it's in development now." - Derrickson explained. "I had a script developed with Scott Teems, who worked on the Halloween films and I think one of the Insidious films. And he did a great job, and I really loved that script, and it was very imaginative, and a really strong adaptation. It didn't end up going anywhere. I'm not involved with it anymore, so I have no idea where it's at."

Interestingly, Derrickson is a fan of King's work. For example, last year's "The Black Phone" was an adaptation of a story by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son.

"He's written so many books. I would have to really stop and think about it if there's a specific one that I could do, would do if I wanted to do any." shared the director regarding another King book he would like to adapt. "But I do know he's a big Sinister and Black Phone fan, and I've communicated with him via email which is a great privilege ... I'd have to think about that for a while. Look, I still think that The Stand has not gotten the treatment that it deserves. I do think it's his best book. I'll just say that."

"The Breathing Method is not just something from the horror world, it combines elements of drama and sci-fi. The short story is part of the collection Different Seasons, along with "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", "Apt Pupil" and "The Body", all of which have been successfully adapted into films.

Here's What The Movie Is About

The plot describes the story of a woman nearing the time of her baby's birth and a doctor who urges her to use an unconventional method of breathing during the birthing process. The woman ends up losing her head in a terrible car accident. However, when the doctor arrives, he finds that her body continues to live through this method of breathing, allowing the woman to complete her labour.

There is currently no information on who will take on the film adaptation or other production details.
