Microsoft adds image enhancement to its Edge browser

Microsoft has unveiled Video Super Resolution (VSR), an experimental video upscaling technology for the Edge web browser that uses machine learning to boost the resolution of low-quality videos. According to the company, VSR technology will "eliminate blocky compression artefacts and improve text clarity for videos on platforms like YouTube". The feature is currently in testing and is available to half of the Canary Edge channel users in the Microsoft Insider programme.

If you want to try the new feature, there are a few conditions:

• The video must be in 720p resolution or lower and no taller than 192 pixels in height;
• the content must not be protected by digital rights management technologies (such as Netflix, Hulu, etc.);
• the device running Microsoft VSR must also contain an Nvidia RTX 20, 30 or 40 series graphics card or an AMD Radeon graphics processor from RX5700 to RX7800.

It should be noted that video scaling technology is not something completely unique - Intel is developing its own interpretation for Chromium-based browsers, and Nvidia offered RTX Super Resolution on Shield TV devices in 2019.
