Sony never expected to make a profit from PlayStation Portal: the device's purpose is to satisfy a specific group of players
On November 15, the PlayStation Portal, a device that can stream your games from the PlayStation 5 via Wi-Fi, was released in full. The Portal costs about $200, but not all gamers understood (or appreciated) Sony's decision to release such a product. One of the most popular questions: "What will the company earn from this?". And the answer was given by Sony Interactive Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Platform Experience.
Here's What We Know
Hideaki Nishino stated that PlayStation Portal was created to increase the time spent interacting with PS5 and is not intended to make a profit.
Sony makes no secret of the fact that PS Portal is designed for people who can't or don't want to sit in front of a TV or monitor every time they want to play on PS5. The Portal is designed to allow you to play wherever you want to play right now, such as in bed or in the kitchen.
In a conversation with the Japanese website AV Watch, Nishino said that PS Portal meets the specific needs of a certain group of players. And as long as Portal increases the time this group spends interacting with PS5, Sony will consider this product a success.
Hideaki also added: "We don't want profitability as much as we want to increase the time spent playing on PS5. If you can play anywhere, I think some people will definitely spend more time playing games".
Flashback
If you own a PlayStation 5 and have never used Apple Music, Sony is teaming up with Apple to give all such console owners access to the service for six months.
