In 2023, more than 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles were sold in Japan, the best result since 2004
According to information recently published by Famitsu, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan last year. Nevertheless, Sony can also boast of excellent results with its PlayStation 5, which sold more than 2.6 million consoles.
Here's What We Know
Last year's result was not only 124% more than in 2022, when 1.5 million units were sold, but also the highest in almost two decades since the PlayStation 2 in 2004.
This was made possible by an improved supply chain for consoles after two years of shortages caused by semiconductor shortages and the Covid pandemic. However, game sales for the PlayStation 5 have been quite low in Japan compared to its main competitor, the Nintendo Switch, where 8 out of 10 best-sellers were handheld exclusives.
