Best external ssd for video editing? fast and portable ($200-500)

I've recently upgraded my video editing rig and I'm looking for a reliable external SSD to match its performance. I work with 4K footage and often edit on-the-go. My workstation is a Mac Pro 2023, but I sometimes use Windows PCs too. My budget is $200-500. I've narrowed it down to three options: the Samsung T7 Shield, the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, and the Crucial X8. Each seems to have its pros and cons, but I'm not sure which would be the best fit for my setup.

What would you recommend and why? Are there any specific features I should be looking out for that might influence my choice?

Before diving into specific models, consider what you need. For 4K video editing, you'll want an SSD with high read/write speeds, at least 1TB capacity, and durable build quality for on-the-go use. Also, look for USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 3/4 compatibility for the fastest transfer speeds.

Hey. Given your work with 4K footage and need for portability, you should consider whether you want a rugged SSD or a sleeker model.

The Samsung T7 Shield and SanDisk Extreme Pro are more durable, while the Crucial X8 is more compact but might be less suited for rough handling.

I'd recommend the Samsung T7 Shield. It's specifically designed for high-performance tasks like video editing and offers great durability. The read/write speeds are impressive, which will really help with 4K footage handling.

I've had the Samsung t7 for six months now, and it's fantastic with my mac pro. The transfer speeds are blazing fast, and it's survived a few accidental drops without any issues.

Why bother with any of these? The internal SSD on your new MacBook Pro is probably fine unless you're some kind of storage snob. Save your money for something useful, like more RAM! :)

while the samsung option is great, I'd actually recommend the sandisk extreme pro. It offers excellent read/write speeds and works seamlessly across Mac and Windows. Plus, its rugged design is perfect for on-the-go editing.

SanDisk Extreme Pro user here. The transfer speeds are phenomenal, and the included software makes it super easy to manage and secure your data across different systems.
