NASAMS air defence system with AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles shoots down more than 90% of air threats that attack Ukraine
Since last year, Ukraine's skies have been covered by NASAMS air defence systems. They are demonstrating very high efficiency.
Here's What We Know
The relevant statement was made by Paul Ferraro, president of the Air Power division of Raytheon. The company supplies Ukraine with AIM-120 AMRAAM aircraft missiles modified for launch from a ground-based launcher.
Ukraine is receiving older versions of the AMRAAM. Its capabilities are significantly inferior to the AIM-120C-8 and AIM-120D-3, which are the most modern versions of the missile. Nevertheless, even the old AMRAAM as part of NASAMS is capable of shooting down more than 90 per cent of aerial threats.
The Ukrainian Air Force uses NASAMS to counter Russian drones and cruise missiles. The surface-to-air missile system can also shoot down aeroplanes and helicopters. The system is capable of providing defence within a radius of 40 km.
Ukraine will receive AIM-120C-8, but it will happen not very soon. Paul Ferraro said that the fifth-generation missile could appear in Ukraine in 3-5 years.
