Late last year, a missile landed in Poland about 50 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. After that, Germany decided to deploy MIM-104 Patriot systems in the country. The deployment of the surface-to-air missile systems came to an end.
Last year, Germany deployed three Patriot units in Poland. The impending withdrawal of the surface-to-air missile systems and 300 German soldiers was reported by Sky News, citing the German Defence Ministry.
Germany first announced plans to remove the MIM-104 Patriot from Poland back in the summer of 2023. The country's Defence Ministry said that the air and missile defence systems will be needed in 2024 for NATO missions. In addition, the systems will have to undergo maintenance. The redeployment will begin next week.
