It's official: the Maisies are one of the oldest galaxies in the universe, appearing 390 million years after the Big Bang

Scientists have confirmed the age of the Maisies galaxy. It is now officially recognised as one of the oldest in our Universe.

Here's What We Know

Confirm the age of Maisies was possible with the help of spectral analysis. Initially, scientists determined the redshift of the galaxy as z14.3. It was thought that Maisies formed 286 million years after the Big Bang.

Spectral analysis found that the real redshift is z11.4. Thus, Maisies appeared 390 million years after the Big Bang. Despite the difference of 104 million years, it remained in the class of the oldest galaxies in our Universe.

Redshift is the amount of lag of light as the expansion of the Universe accelerates. As light escapes into the red and infrared regions, scientists are forced to use infrared instruments to peer into the early years of the Universe.
