The MIM-104 Patriot almost simultaneously destroyed six Kh-47M2 hypersonic missiles and intercepted 80 airborne threats in a month
Last month, the MIM-104 Patriot air defence system intercepted the world's first hypersonic missile. It did so seven times. Colonel Sergiy Yaremenko, commander of the 96th antiaircraft missile brigade of the Centre air command, spoke about the work of the American system.
Here's What We Know
In early May, the Ukrainian Air Force shot down the first Kh-47M2 hypersonic missile. In doing so, the servicemen did not immediately know what target they had managed to intercept. They only realised that they had shot down the Kh-47M2 a few days later, when experts examined the wreckage.
On May 16, the air defense system intercepted six hypersonic missiles, demonstrating 100 percent effectiveness. Colonel Yaremenko says that 16 missiles were fired at Kyiv that night, flying along a ballistic trajectory.
Most of them were aimed specifically at the MIM-104 Patriot. The US complex was attacked almost simultaneously by several missiles, including six hypersonic Kh-47M2s. As a result, the Patriot division was able to intercept all air threats. Colonel Yaremenko also noted that a total of 80 targets were shot down by the US anti-aircraft missile system during the month.
