Raytheon received $583 million to develop situational awareness technology for Abrams tanks, M109 Paladin howitzers and Bradley combat vehicles
Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of Raytheon, has been awarded a $583 million contract to develop a new iteration of technology that will provide the military with battlefield awareness.
Here's What We Know
The technology is called Mounted Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing Systems (MAPS). The second-generation (GEN II) solution will enable troops to know where they are and where they are headed even when the GPS signal is down and other systems are inoperable.
MAPS GEN I has been deployed in Europe since 2019. It is used in Stryker armored personnel carriers, which are based on Canada's LAV II combat vehicles. The second iteration targets more than just the Stryker. The U.S. plans to integrate MAPS GEN II into Abrams tanks, M109 Paladin self-propelled howitzers, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Humvee armored vehicles.
The contract, worth more than half a billion dollars, has a five-year lead time. How many Collins Aerospace vehicles should be equipped with MAPS GEN II system is not specified yet.
