BAE Systems has announced a successful test of a sub-calibre guided long-range projectile. The XM907E2 howitzer, which has a 58 calibre barrel, was used for the test.

Here's What We Know

The long-range artillery projectile is being developed by BAE Systems for the US Army under the XM1155 Extended Range Artillery Projectile programme. Tests have confirmed the compatibility of the new ammunition with the next generation howitzer test bed. BAE stated that the projectile destroyed a stationary target.

The final product of the XM1155 Extended Range Artillery Projectile programme will be a guided projectile that will be able to engage stationary and moving targets. The range will be more than doubled compared to current ammunition.

In parallel, BAE Systems is working on a new generation howitzer. The development is taking place within the Extended Range Cannon Artillery program. The prototype artillery unit is called the M1299. The new howitzer will replace the M109A7 Paladin.

In mid-fall 2022, BAE Systems used the M1299 to test the LR-PGK, which converts conventional projectiles into high-precision weapons. It has intercept protection and is compatible with M795, M1128, XM1113 AND M549A1 projectiles.
