Japan deploys MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3 surface-to-air missile systems 350km from Taiwan to intercept ballistic missiles

The Japanese Defense Forces have deployed MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3 surface-to-air missile systems on the island of Miyako, which is 350 km from Taiwan. China did not like that decision very much.

Chinese experts believe that Japan's goal is to move as many surface-to-air missiles and anti-ship missiles as possible to the island. This would allow Japan to intervene in a potential military conflict between China and Taiwan.

According to Hirokazu Matsuno, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, the US air defense system on Miyako Island is aimed at intercepting North Korean ballistic missiles. The Land of the Rising Sun has also deployed MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3s on Ishigaki and Yonaguni islands for this purpose.

It is worth noting that North Korea is actively launching ballistic missiles towards Japan and the Republic of Korea during 2022-2023. The DPRK is also preparing for its first nuclear weapons test in many years. For this reason, the US regularly conducts exercises in the region using B-52H strategic bombers. The US also intends to send Ohio-class submarines to South Korea for the first time in 40 years capable of carrying Trident II missiles with nuclear warheads.
