Fincantieri has been awarded a contract to build a new submarine. The new generation submarine for the Italian Navy will represent the U212 NFS (Near Future Submarine) class.

Here's What We Know

The construction of the submarine will take place under the auspices of the Organisation for Cooperation in Armaments (OCCAR). Fincantieri has received more than €500m and can expect to receive an additional €160m in the future if modifications are required.

The submarine will be the third member of the U212 NFS class. The company has been contracted to build and deliver two U212 NFS submarines in 2021. The value including 10 years of logistics support was €1.35bn.

Fincantieri started construction of the first submarine last year. Earlier this summer, a steel cutting ceremony was held for the hull of the second submarine. They are expected to be handed over to the Italian Navy in 2027 and 2029 respectively.

The next-generation submarines will boast lithium-ion fuel cells created in Italy. They will also get a new command and control system. The length will be 58.3 metres, an increase of 1.2 metres compared to the U212A submarines.

The diesel-electric submarine will receive six 533mm Black Shark Advanced heavy torpedo launchers, which are designed by Italian company Leonardo. The U212 NFS submarines will also be able to launch anti-ship missiles.
