Joe Biden and NASA showed an amazing picture of deep space from the James Webb telescope, which is revolutionizing astrophysics

U.S. President Joe Biden and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson revealed the first photograph taken by the James Webb Space Telescope ( JWST).

What's known

The unique and incredibly detailed image (download in full resolution ) demonstrates the capabilities of the new telescope and marks the beginning of a new era of deep space exploration. on July 12, the space agency will publish a series of full-color images produced by the James Webb telescope.

The James Webb Space Telescope could revolutionize astrophysics. The telescope is equipped with the largest mirror ever seen in space. With it, the telescope was able to collect the light of stars that formed just after the Big Bang.

The image captures the cluster of thousands of galaxies as it was 4.6 billion years ago. This part of the sky is called SMACS 0723. The galaxies bend space-time and offer a glimpse deep into space. According to the administrator at NASA, light from some galaxies has been traveling to the telescope's mirror for 13 billion years. The distortion in the image appeared as a result of the effects of gravity on the light as it travels to the telescope.

Note that astronomers photographed the region SMACS 0723 and before, but it was "James Webb" allowed to get an incredibly detailed photo. It should be mentioned that the picture was taken in infrared light, so the shades had to be filled in manually.

Photo from James Webb Space Telescope made with a shutter speed of 12.5 hours. It took the Hubble telescope several weeks to take some of the photos. You can see what the Hubble image SMACS 0723 looks like above.
