Court forbids Tesla to take money from Full Self-Driving subscribers for upgrading the onboard computer

Tesla won't be able to make an extra $1,000 on car owners who paid for the Full Self-Driving feature with a subscription.

All Tesla vehicles that have been released since 2016 have the hardware needed to operate the Full Self-Driving feature. However, owners of older cars must upgrade the onboard computer. In some cases, for an additional fee.

Elon Musk's company announced that if you buy Full Self-Driving on a permanent basis for $15,000, the on-board computers will be upgraded for free. Tesla electric car owners who got the Full Self-Driving feature on a $199-a-month subscription will need to pay an additional $1,000 (it used to be $1,500) to install the new computer.

However, one lucky Tesla Model 3 owner named Ian Jordan won a lawsuit, and now the company has to replace his on-board computer from version v2.5 to v3.0 for free. In addition, he was able to sue Tesla for over $1600 to upgrade the Model 3 entertainment system and get $500 compensation for not being able to listen to AM radio for a while.
