Japan deploys Aegis ships JS Atago, JS Kongo with SM-3 missiles and deploys MIM-104 PATRIOT PAC-3 systems to destroy DPRK spy satellite
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is preparing to launch a spy satellite into space. But Japan has plans of its own.
Here's What We Know
Japan has deployed a two-tiered missile defence system in response to the North Korean leader's order to launch a satellite. The first level is based on the Aegis system. JS Atago, JS Kongo ships have been deployed at sea for this purpose. They can fire RIM-161 Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) missiles, which are designed to destroy ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere.
The second level of missile defense is represented by the MIM-104 PATRIOT PAC-3. Japan has deployed US anti-aircraft missile systems on the territory of the Okinawa prefecture. They can intercept air threats at altitudes up to 40 kilometres.
Japan's defence ministry has ordered the Self-Defence Forces to prepare for the destruction of ballistic missiles or spy satellites to be launched by North Korea. It is possible that the PAC-3s are deployed on the islands of Sakishima in the southwestern Okinawa prefecture, from where they could shoot down a DPRK satellite after launch. The PATRIOT can also be used to destroy the wreckage.
