The United States follows Britain in wanting to give Ukraine depleted uranium shells that would be "very effective" against Russian tanks
The Ukrainian Armed Forces should receive American M1 Abrams tanks in the autumn. US President Joe Biden's administration is considering sending the "gift" together with the combat vehicles.
Here's What We Know
We are talking about sub-caliber projectiles, which have tips made of depleted uranium. The Ukrainian Armed Forces previously received such ammunition from the UK along with the Challenger 2 main battle tanks.
This was reported by The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper quoted its own sources as saying that the White House is ready to approve the supply of such shells together with the M1 Abrams tanks.
The depleted uranium shells are "very effective" against Russian tanks. Although some officials have "expressed concern" about the shipments, a senior White House official said there are no major obstacles to the decision.
As for depleted uranium itself, this is the material that remains after most of the highly radioactive form of uranium has been extracted from uranium ore. Its use is permitted and does not amount to the use of nuclear weapons. However, the projectile ruptures when it hits the target, and the small particles can pose a threat to human health.
