Kongsberg unveils NASAMS self-propelled anti-aircraft missile system with IRIS-T missiles based on the German ACSV G5 armoured vehicle

The Norwegian defence procurement authority Forsvarsmateriell and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have unveiled a new version of the NASAMS air defence system. The first demonstration test of the short-range surface-to-air missile system took place at the end of May 2023.

Here's What We Know

The NASAMS self-propelled launcher uses the ACSV G5 chassis. The armoured vehicle is designed by the German company Flensburger Fahrzeugbau GmbH, and is manufactured in Norway at the Ritek factory.

The complex is equipped with an X-band radar. The XENTA-M radar was developed by Weibel Scientific of Denmark. The maximum range can reach up to 75 km, but the specific station model is not specified.

NASAMS uses IRIS-T air-to-air missiles modified for launch from ground-based launchers. An identical solution is used in the German anti-aircraft missile system of the same name.

The tactical and technical characteristics of the new version of the NASAMS are not specified. For comparison, the German IRIS-T SLS is capable of engaging air targets up to 12 km in range and up to 8 km in height.
