Samsung has patented a square smartphone with a retractable display

Samsung already has several generations of foldable smartphones in different shapes: "folding" and devices whose screen opens like a book. But it seems that the company continues to experiment with the design, shape and technology of displays.

Here's What We Know

Samsung's new patent describes an unusual foldable smartphone with a retractable screen. The gadget itself is quite compact and has a square shape, but when necessary, the hidden part of the display slides out of the bottom, increasing its size. As a result, when folded you get a small device, and when unfolded - a full-fledged smartphone.

In theory, such a display could solve the problem of creases, folds and short-lived flexible displays. Although it's still unclear how it works itself, and whether the retractable mechanism would cause damage to the display.

Either way, it's just a patent for now, not a finished product. Whether Samsung will bring this project to life is unknown.
